Dr. Jennifer Smith received her Ph.D. in Hispanic Literature from Indiana University. Her main areas of research are late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Iberian literature and culture, with a special focus on medical discourses on gender and sexuality and their dialog with literary works. Her book Women, Mysticism, and Hysteria in Fin-de-siècle Spain (Vanderbilt UP, 2021) explores the use of medical discourses on female sexuality to diagnose mysticism in woman as a symptom of a sexual “disease” in order to discredit viable models of emancipated women. Her research also explores questions of race and class. Examples include her two recent edited volumes --Modern Spanish Women as Agents of Change (Bucknell UP, 2018) and Intersections of Race, Class, Gender, and Nation in Fin-de-Siècle Spanish Literature and Culture (Routledge, 2017, co-edited with Lisa Nalbone). Additionally, Dr. Smith has published a bilingual edition of Emilia Pardo Bazán’s Insolación (Cervantes & Co., 2011) and numerous articles, several of which have appeared in journals such as Revista Canadiense de Estudios Hispánicos, Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, and Anales de la Literatura Española Contemporánea. Here at SIUC, Dr. Smith teaches courses in Spanish and Latin American literature, film, and culture. She also directs the summer study abroad program in Alcalá de Henares, Spain.
